Fortnite players caught wind of the gifting feature after spotting a change to the options under the Account and Content page in the game’s settings menu. Under the header “Gifting,” players can find options allowing them to enable or deny receiving gifts from other players.
As the screenshot of the gifting menu began to do the rounds on social media, an Epic Games representative named MrPopoTFS informed fans that “gifting will be coming in future.” Although the team doesn’t have an exact release date to share just yet, MrPopoTFS vowed to keep fans informed once that information is available.
With the new Fortnite feature still in development and with Epic yet to reveal full details about gifting, fans are being forced to speculate on how it works. In particular, players want to know what sort of content they will be able to gift. Will it be limited to the game’s many cosmetic skins? Will the feature only be available with Fortnite Battle Royale or will players be able to trade blueprints, characters, and resources in Fortnite Save The World as well?
Moreover, fans want to know whether gifting will be possible cross-platform. The game has a huge playerbase on mobile devices, where it has already made $50 million (it makes an estimated $1.8 million in daily revenue) and so it would be a shame if players on iOS missed out. There will also be increased demand for the feature when the game arrives on Android later this summer and fans will be keen to bolster their cosmetic piles too.
Though, it will be interesting to see what, if any, restrictions Epic Games puts in to ensure that the feature isn’t abused. Fortnite’s problems with fraud have already been documented, but some may fear that scammers will make fraudulent charges to a player’s account before using the gifting feature to transfer those ill-gotten gains to another player. Although Epic has urged fans to make use of the additional security features available to them, not all will have taken heed of the notice. As such, concerns will remain high until Epic Games fully outlines how gifting will work.
