The ever-popular battle royale title from Epic Games is receiving its first update in two weeks, with the last update adding the Star Wars-themed Skywalker week. The oddly-timed week temporarily brought Lightsabers and E-11 Blaster Rifles back to the island, but players have been devoid of anything else new to do on the island - until now.

The most significant component of Fortnite’s v22.40 update is the addition of the Octane from Rocket League. The Octane was previously brought into Fortnite as part of the game’s v22.10 update in Creative Mode, with the vehicle now accessible in Battle Royale and Zero Build modes. The iconic vehicle features all the same capabilities found in the game it hails from, including: rocket boosters, supersonic speed, the ability to jump, double jump, dodge, take flight, and drive on walls. The Octane has been “balanced” for these modes, meaning it may be a bit less capable than its Creative Mode counterpart.
One of the other big additions coming to Battle Royale and Zero Build is the new Grapple Glider item. A twist on the fan-favorite Grappler item, the Grapple Glider allows the user to aim and fire at a hard surface, pulling them up into the air and activating their Glider. The item seems to be an excellent option for players looking to make a quick escape from intense situations, especially in building-heavy POIs like Tilted Towers. Fortnite’s Grapple Gliders can be found from the ground, Chests, Chrome Chests, and Supply Drops.
Another major part of Fortnite’s v22.40 update is the long-awaited addition of Big Battle Limited Time Mode. Rumors of Big Battle Mode returning have been swirling since mid-August, with many of the supposed details turning out to be true. Rather than 50v50, the new Big Battle LTM is 40v40. Veteran players can expect a faster pace than before, with the Storm already circling the first zone, a pre-loaded Uncommon loadout, and exclusively Rare or higher loot. The LTM is Zero Build as well, ensuring relatively quick matches.
Lastly is an update for mobile and creative. With mobile, the interact/use button has been entirely removed from the fire button, with specific actions getting their own icons. For Creative, the battle royale island has now become a “starter island” for creators to craft their own experiences with. It has also been announced that Fortnite will be vaulting Battle Lab in v23.00, likely the update coming after the highly-anticipated Chapter 3 finale.
Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and mobile devices.
