During a recent AMA, Fortnite design, engineering, and production developers fielded some questions from its fanbase, with one participant asking if the developers intended on adding a respawn feature. It’s worth contextualizing that Fortnite has tinkered with this concept in the past, as many large-team LTMs have general respawning active, but for it to come to smaller team modes, many would want something like Apex Legends.
The developers answered this question by stating that they’ve discussed the mechanic and want to make sure it is implemented properly before moving forward, but also said to keep an eye out throughout Fortnite season 8. With any luck, players can expect this feature to drop in a few weeks’ time. In fact, what was said was,
Notably, many may believe this to be a knee-jerk reaction to the up-and-comer in the battle royale genre, Apex Legends. It seems to have done little, if anything, to the momentum of Fortnite, so it seems unlikely that this is a decision based on competition instead of giving the players what they want. This could change, however, if Apex’s first season is successful, as the game is already on pace to exceed Fortnite’s popularity.
All things considered, a respawn system would likely do much to relieve the pressure of dying quickly in duo and squad modes of Fortnite. Whether it’s something like Apex or something more unique (as is often Fortnite’s way), only time will tell, but season 8 is right around the corner.
Fortnite is out now in early access for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
